Introduction
The mission of the English department at Park University is to instill in its students critical practices in reading, writing and thinking in order to promote creative and humanist responses to literature, life and intellectual endeavor.
No matter what their professional goals, students in our English degree program enjoy a rewarding undergraduate curriculum that presents a wide range of career opportunities upon graduation. A degree in English stresses the development of analytical reading and reasoning skills and the articulate use of oral and written language. But at Park University, the English degree also stresses a global, multicultural focus. It thus equips students with an appreciation of one of the most important cultural artifacts of the human experience–literature–and instills an understanding of the history and culture of diverse societies around the globe. Students can only pursue an English Bachelor’s degree in Parkville, Mo. through the 16-week program; however, an English minor is available either face-to-face or online.
English majors may concentrate on either of two programs: literature or writing. Both programs encourage students to explore many facets of human nature and culture through the study of literature and to develop understanding and skillful use of language. Both concentrations help students acquire the knowledge, analytical skills and writing abilities needed by such professionals as writers, editors, teachers, business managers and lawyers.
Students who earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Park University establish a strong background in writing and analytical skills that prepare them for numerous career opportunities in a variety of fields, including:
- Writing and creative writing for books, plays, scripts and media
- Editing
- Teaching
- Management/administration
This degree requires a minimum of 122 total credit hours to graduate.
