As a BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science student at Surrey, you’ll be able to pursue the areas of scientific study that interest you most, plus have access to our recently opened £10m Innovation for Health Learning Laboratories.
What you will study
Our fully-accredited BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science course has been developed to allow you the option of pursuing a career as a registered biomedical scientist in the healthcare sector, as it satisfies the requirements of the Institute of Biomedical Science. This is in addition to the many other career options open to students graduating from this course.
In your first year, you’ll develop a broad range of skills that give you an excellent foundation on which you can build across the rest of your course. The modular structure of the BSc (Hons) or MSci (Hons) Biomedical Science programmes allows you to pursue the subjects essential to your qualification while also giving you the flexibility to study other topics that interest you.
"Through the experiences of mixing with such a spectrum of unique individuals at Surrey and immersing myself in the American culture for my placement, I have evolved a distinctive principled outlook and discovered I have a voice.” Sophia Fochler, student

Placements
You have the option to complete a Professional Training placement as part of this course. This will give you the opportunity to develop your professional, academic and personal potential, helping to prepare you for your future career.
A significant proportion of placement students at Surrey are offered graduate-level jobs or go onto postgraduate study.
Biomedical Science placements
Our experienced Professional Training tutors will help you choose between, and apply to, a well-vetted selection of impressive placements in the pharmaceutical industry, hospitals and in academia.
You’ll have the opportunity to apply for placements both in the UK and in other countries such as Finland and the US. Regular placements include Harvard University and Cornell University.
If you’d like to prepare a Health and Care Professions Council registration portfolio, there are a limited number of accredited placements available during the Professional Training placement.

Study and work abroad
We give our students the opportunity to acquire international experience during their studies by taking advantage of our exchange agreements with overseas universities or by completing a Professional Training placement abroad.
Want to study at an overseas institution as part of your degree or work abroad during your Professional Training year? Perhaps you would like to volunteer in India or learn about Brazilian business and culture in São Paulo during your summer holidays? With more than 200 partnerships, from 50 different countries worldwide, there is something for everyone.
Not only is the opportunity to go abroad a hugely enjoyable experience, but you will also develop key skills and knowledge that will strengthen your CV and increase your employability.
Please note: the status of the Erasmus+ scheme is dependent on the outcome of the Brexit negotiations.
In addition, or alternatively, you may wish to spend your Professional Training placement working in another country. Students have travelled to the US, Australia and many European countries, and typically work in a research laboratory at a partner institution.
"The placement year was by far the best part of my course. I learnt so much being in a working lab that you can’t learn in lectures or teaching labs.” Rebecca Ellerington, graduate
