Smart Choice is a model program developed by Northeastern State University. The unique blended-colour logo and the Smart Choice slogan represent a commitment on the part of NSU and participating two-year colleges to help students make a seamless transition from earning an associate’s degree to attaining a four-year degree in the program of their choice.

Students wishing to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education must meet the following requirements: Student will have completed a minimum 45 hours and have a 2.75 overall Grade Point Average; ALL potential teacher education majors must show verification that they have taken, or are registered to take, the Oklahoma General Education Test (OGET) when they begin classes in NSU’s Professional Education sequence. Students may complete either an Associate of Science or Arts Degree. Within their Associate’s degree, students should complete the required prerequisites for their major.

All Early Childhood Education majors must complete the 4 x 12 requirements. Students will complete 12 hours in 4 areas: Communication Arts, Social Sciences, Math, and Science. In each course of the 4 x 12, students must receive a grade of “C” or better.

Communication Arts (12 hours required)

  • SPCH 1113 Introduction to Speech Communication
  • 3 hours Course in English, Literature, or Speech

Social Sciences (12 hours required)

  • PSY 1113 General Psychology
  • HIST 2483 American History 1492 - 1865 or
    HIST 2493 American History 1865 - Present
  • POS 1113 American Federal Government and Politics
  • 3 hours Course in Geography, History, Social Sciences, Political Science, or Psychology

Mathematics (12 hours required)

  • MATH 1513 College Algebra or
    MATH 1413 College Algebra
  • 9 hours Will be completed in the major requirements

Science (12 hours required)

  • GPS 1214 General Physical Science
  • BIO 1214 General Biology
  • SCI 4 hours Will be completed in major requirements

*GPS 1214 or BIO 1214 must contain a lab experience. All courses require a grade of "C" or better.

Zero level courses will not be accepted to fulfil 4 x 12 requirements.

Language other than English (3 hours required)

  • All Education majors are required to complete a three-hour course in a language other than English.
