The Academy of Art University’s School of Art History BA program is a unique major that addresses the traditional art historical study through the analysis of visual culture from antiquity to the present. Complemented with fine art studio coursework (12 units), the BA allows for students to engage in critical and research-based analysis of art and architecture, learning to study the visual culture through its role and influence on different cultures and periods. With internationally recognized faculty and access to a rich offering of coursework, the AAU’s Art History BA prepares students for a career in art-related fields: e.g. in art galleries, museums, foundations, archiving, publishing, and public arts administration.

An Art History graduate can look forward to a career in museum curation, art advising, art law and enforcement, corporate consulting, appraising and more. Art History students study the history of the visual arts in their cultural and social context. Students learn to describe, analyze, and interpret the form and content of works of art and become familiar with art history theory, methods of analysis and art criticism.

As an art history major at Mason, you'll investigate works of art to learn about how and why they were made, and about the people who made them. The Art History and Criticism, BA is designed for students to pursue careers as art historians, critics, or curators in museums or galleries. It may also serve as a foundation for graduate study in art history.

Deepen your understanding of the role of art in culture and politics from prehistory to the modern period. A major in Art History offers students a critical view of the role of art in culture and politics from prehistory to the modern era. Coursework offers comprehensive studies in the history of art through rigorous visual analysis, engagement with current scholarship and the application of various methodological approaches. Students gain wide knowledge of the history of art through introductory courses and then take specialty courses in areas including early modern Europe, the history of photography, Latin America, modern and contemporary, among others.

In an increasingly visual world, Art History provides students with the skills to think with and through imagery as a global form of communication. At MSU Denver, our curriculum emphasizes an inclusive approach to diverse traditions of art making and visual cultures from around the world. We also seek to balance critical questions surrounding art, its creation, and the cultural conventions and contexts of representation with an experiential, hands-on approach to the humanities.

The curriculum in Art History reflects the belief that a traditional liberal arts program, supplemented by travel, is the best preparation for students who wish to teach the history of art at the college level or work in museums and galleries. Students will not specialize in a particular area such as Renaissance or Modern, but will acquire a general knowledge of the history of art. All Art History majors are required to take at least one 4000-level non-Western Art History course. Courses in areas such as history, philosophy, and literature are recommended as electives, both as supplement to undergraduate courses in art history and as a BA ckground for future graduate work. Art History majors are required to take courses in studio art as a means of better understanding what is involved in the art making process. It is important that students make every effort to travel to major museums in this country and, if possible, abroad.

Art history is one of the broadest fields in the humanities, concerned not only with the nature of works of art — their form, style, and content — but also with the social, political, and cultural circumstances that shape them. This minor encourages a lifelong understanding and appreciation of art and design, with opportunities to cultivate more advanced and specialized knowledge.

You'll find Hanover students exploring firsthand the masterpieces on display in cities as close as Cincinnati and as far away Florence, Italy, and Paris, France.

The Art Studio program is designed to deliver a broad range of hands-on studio practices to the art major. Areas of focus include painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, ceramics, printmaking, and time-based media. Course choices/sequences are determined by the student according to major distribution requirements.
