Aquatic and fisheries science is the study of aquatic ecosystems to increase scientific understanding and to apply this knowledge to their management and conservation, thereby sustaining them for multiple uses.

The Earth is called the "blue planet" because of the abundance of water covering its surface. However, less than one percent of that is available freshwater, a precious resource we need to survive. Freshwater scientists study the health of freshwater systems—lakes, rivers, streams, ponds, wetlands—gathering critical information such as the impact of invasive species, changing levels of biological diversity, and the effects of climate change and pollution. Faculty expertise and the Lake Superior region contribute to the development of both classroom and non-classroom learning experiences in the area of Ecology, Aquatic Biology and Fishery Science. Students interested in careers in aquatic ecology, marine biology, terrestrial ecology, field biology, resource management or natural resource education will be advised to take courses within the Biology Major, which prepare them for work or graduate studies in these fields.

The Department of Animal Science (DAS) belongs to the School of Animal Biosciences of the Agricultural University of Athens (AUA). The University was founded in 1920 under the name of the Higher Agricultural School of Athens (HASA) and is the first Higher Education Institution in the field of Agriculture and the third in terms of antiquity, after the National and Kapodistrian University and the National Technical University of Athens.

Faculty of Fisheries have been founded to train personnel and researchers expert in Marine and Freshwater Sciences, Fisheries and Aquaculture; and do research and publish in these areas. For this reason, the faculty aims to provide students with necessary applications and lectures and aims to monitor the ecological health of marine and freshwater habitat and help national fisheries and aquaculture industries.

The Fish & Wildlife Technology Program is offered as an optional addition to the Forest Technology Program. Any student who feels they would like to pursue the field of monitoring and assessment of wildlife as a career path is strongly encouraged to consider the program. Students who wish to pursue this program may register for the program prior to the beginning of their second year of studies and complete it either concurrently together with the Forest Technology Diploma program, or by itself in the third year of study. A Fish & Wildlife Technician is skilled in the use of technologies and knowledgeable of the various techniques, associated with monitoring and assessing wildlife species and their habitats. Students who take the Fish & Wildlife program graduate with an Advanced Diploma in Forest and Fish & Wildlife Technology.
