This interdisciplinary program, offered jointly by the Faculty of Science and the Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute, covers all aspects of brain function, including brain development, nerve cells and synapses, sensation and perception, learning and memory, control of movement, animal behavior, cognitive psychology, and disorders of the nervous system.

Anthropology explores the origins and history of the human species through investigating biological, cultural, and linguistic diversity in human populations. You will be able to take courses related to four major subfields of Anthropology: Archaeology, Biological, Linguistic, and Cultural Anthropology. Our faculty members have expertise in a range of societies and cultures, past and present, and a range of world areas. Through your courses, you may be exposed to laboratories where you can identify and interpret artifacts and fossils, or the opportunity to conduct and present original research.

Human geography is a branch of social science that focuses on the relationships between human societies and the built and natural environments in which they operate. You will have the opportunity to learn about topics of real world concern through supervised research projects, paid work experience, a two-week field school, and activities such as blog entries, posters, and presentations. Your professors have a wide range of interests, such as hazards, housing, and sustainability, and their research takes them to all corners of Canada and beyond.

Physical education is the relationship between health, physical activity, and recreation. This major is an outstanding foundational degree for careers in health sciences or education. Specialized knowledge gained in this program includes: growth and structure of the human body, effective and efficient movement of the body, the edge between performance and injury, and critical engagement in historical trends and development. When you study physical education, you'll also look at sport and wellness to help encourage healthy living for all.

The Bachelor of Theology (Intercultural Ministry) Program provides spiritual growth, Biblical knowledge, and ministry development with a special focus on intercultural ministry. It is designed to call forth and prepare long-term ministry-focused leaders. Our goal is to see graduates deployed nationally and internationally to develop holistic church planting movements that make disciples of nations, baptizing and teaching believers to obey all that Christ has commanded.

Classes over the course of the diploma provide an extensive approach to learning and training. Core to the program, you will take Bible as a Story, which explains the impact of the Bible’s big picture metanarrative in your first semester. In your second semester, Teaching Methods & Theories of Learning will help you teach and apply the Bible to children in practical and engaging ways. Upper year courses like Administration of Children’s & Family Ministry and Curriculum Design will equip you with the skills you need to successfully lead in a ministry context. More than just dispensing information, Vanguard attempts to help students develop critical thinking, wrestling through the scriptures and establishing an approach that reflects those biblical values. Engage the business community through current case studies, networking, independent studies, the co-operative education experience, and international study tours. This program explores our visual world and its messages. Course topics range widely, from representations of sex and death in the Renaissance, to performing bodies in contemporary activist art, to China’s design revolution. You’ll learn the practice of slow looking, how to pose original questions of art works, and how to engage in creative research projects, including faculty/student curatorial projects and pop-up exhibitions in public spaces.

The Youth Ministry program prepares men and women to understand and relate to youth culture, love teens, lead them to Jesus, and equip them for ministry. Students in the Youth Ministry major are trained to lead church-based youth groups, campus clubs, city-wide events, small groups, camps, retreats, local outreach projects, and overseas missions trips. A crucial element of training is a carefully integrated program of weekly ministry in the church, campus, or community, and a 400-hour internship. Our goal is to produce competent, confident, capable, and compassionate youth pastors and youth workers for the church and other agencies in Canada and around the world.

Our unique Bachelor of Social Work focuses on the ways social, environmental, and economic issues interrelate, and how we all fit into the larger community. Sustainability and social work practice with Indigenous peoples are core to our program. You develop professional practice skills through practicum placements. Upon graduation, you are prepared to work in a diverse range of health, mental health, child and family, community, and human service settings.
