Introduction
General Education Requirements
In addition to completing the major requirements, all students must meet the NCASExternalgeneral education requirements , and have a total of at least 124 degree credits. For first-year students starting at Rutgers Newark in Fall 2012 or later, the general education requirements apply. These new requirements will apply to transfer students who start at Rutgers Newark in Fall 2014 or later.
To qualify forAmerican Chemical Society certification, students must complete Biochemistry (160:581), one additional three-credit graduate chemistry course, and six credits of research (160:451,452), in addition to the requirements for the B.A. degree.
UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH
Chemical Research (160:451,452) is a course for Rutgers-Newark chemistry majors (usually juniors or seniors) doing independent research in a faculty research laboratory. Students must make special arrangements with a member of the faculty before registering for the course, and obtain a special permission number from Dr. Huskey. At the end of the semester, students must submit a report of their research progress.
The Minority Biomedical Research Program (MBRS)x offers a broad range of research opportunities. Contact the MBRS office at 973-353-5772 for application information. Also check this External MBRS news stor for s undergraduate research universities External (REU sites) throughout the U.S. Look out for postings in the early Spring semester. Students from Rutgers-Newark can apply to any of these programs. Most programs include a summer stipend and housing arrangements for student participants.
Additional undergraduate research opportunities my be found posted on the bulletin board near the elevator on the second floor of Olson Hall. These are usually posted in January and February.
The bulletin board on the second floor of Olson Hall has a selection of posters from various graduate programs in the US and Canada. In addition, Prof. Sheridan has many of the brochures and information on other programs in his office. Come by and take a look.
