Introduction
Data plays a huge role in our everyday lives. In addition to studying the science of data, students work with our Statistical Consulting Laboratory providing advice to government, industry, and academia.
In 2010, we celebrated our 25th anniversary as a department in the College of Arts & Sciences. It has been an eventful quarter of a century because statistics – the science of data – has become increasingly important as modern society becomes more data and information driven.
Indeed, statisticians are in great demand today in various work settings, including pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies, market research firms, financial service companies, government, industry, and education.
The B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees are offered. In addition, the Certificate of Graduate Study in Applied Statistics (C.A.S.) and the Master of Applied Statistics (M.A.S.) are available to students worldwide via distance (online) delivery. The C.A.S. is designed to provide engineers and scientists with the modern data analytic tools needed for effective practice as a specialist in statistical methods, and can be the first step towards a graduate degree in statistics; the M.A.S. is geared toward individuals currently working in a business, government, or industrial setting.
Our 13 professors and three full-time instructors are well-known for their teaching and research excellence, and the department is growing in size and stature: since 2000, our Ph.D. program has doubled in size, and in 2010, we were ranked among the Top 50 graduate statistics programs in the country by U.S. News & World Report.
Students meet well-known statisticians from the United States and abroad through our active colloquium series. In addition, our Statistical Consulting Laboratory provides advice to more than 150 clients in government, industry, and academia each year.
The statistics department has a mission of teaching, research, and service, which we fulfill through graduate and undergraduate instruction, cutting-edge research, and expert consulting.
Minoring in Statistics
A Minor in Statistics consists of 18 hours of 500-level statistics courses. Minor credit will be given for at most one of STAT 509 and STAT 515. Students need to register for the Statistics Minor in the College of Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Office, Flinn Hall.

Career Prospects for Statisticians are looking good. See the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Outlook for statisticians and for actuaries.
